How shared history and cross-device retry work

There is no password. You type your email in Settings, we send you a link, and clicking it signs that computer in. Every device you sign in with the same email reads the same history.

The recording is made on your device, then sent. Our server turns it into text, tidies it up, adds it to your history, and sends the text back to be typed at your cursor. Each dictation keeps a note of which device it came from, which app it went into where we can tell, how it was made, and whether it worked.

Your other signed-in devices read the same history list, so the dictation you just made on the laptop shows up on the desktop and in the Android app. The target is that this happens within about five seconds.

The recording is kept alongside the text. If a dictation failed, or came out wrong, pressing Retry runs the original recording again. Because the recording is on the server and not only on the machine that made it, you can press Retry from a different device.

The case this was built for: your PC loses its connection mid-sentence, the dictation shows as failed, and you redo it from your phone and get the text.

A job runs once a day and deletes the recordings that have passed 14 days. The text of the dictation stays in your history until you delete it.

After a recording expires, the dictation is still there and still readable, and you can no longer redo it, because the recording it would have run again is gone.

History is private to your account by default. A team can be made visible to its members, which means members of that team read the same list of dictations rather than only their own. That is a setting, and it is off unless it is switched on for the team.

Deleting a dictation from your history marks it deleted and it stops appearing on every device. The recording is removed by the daily job rather than at the moment you press delete, so a deleted dictation's recording can sit there for the rest of its 14 days.
