Why the good dictation apps keep skipping Windows
Most of the interesting dictation tools of the last two years launched on macOS and stayed there. Superwhisper is Mac first. MacWhisper, VoiceInk and BetterDictation are Mac only. The tools that do ship a Windows version tend to be subscriptions that send everything you say to their own servers, and the Windows versions get the complaints. The Windows version of Quickword is the one the person who makes Quickword uses all day on his own PC, which is not true of most of the alternatives.
- Runs on ordinary Windows PCs. This is not a waitlist and not a beta channel.
- Nothing you say is uploaded, and it keeps working when your connection drops.
- If you are coming from Wispr Flow, the keys are the same ones your hands already know: hold Ctrl and Shift to talk, tap Ctrl, Shift and Z for hands-free.

What the install and the first dictation look like
- 01Download the installer and click past the SmartScreen warning. The exact clicks are on the download page.
- 02Pick a voice option on the first screen. If you are not sure, take the one marked Recommended.
- 03Allow it to use your microphone.
- 04Hold Ctrl and Shift, say a sentence, let go. The text appears where you were typing.

The settings people actually change
- How it starts. Hold a key while you talk, tap once to start and again to stop, or let a short press and a long press do different things.
- The keys themselves. Every one can be changed, including the hands-free one.
- The word list. Add a name or a piece of jargon and it comes out spelled correctly instead of however it sounded.
- Whether the ums are cut, whether a space is added at the end, how the text is inserted, and whether other sound is muted while you talk.

Is this better than Windows voice typing with Win and H?
It answers a different need. Windows voice typing requires an internet connection, sends what you say to Microsoft, and never learns your vocabulary. Quickword does the work on your own PC, adds punctuation, cuts the ums, and lets you teach it the words it keeps getting wrong.
Does it work on Windows 10?
There is no Windows 10 specific block, but the developer tests on Windows 11.
Does it work in a terminal?
Yes. The text is typed into whichever window you were in, and the recording pill never takes your typing away from it, so a terminal, a code editor and a browser field all behave the same way.
Is there a Windows ARM build?
No. Only the standard Windows version is published. The one for ARM laptops is possible and has not been built.
